photos from Steampunk World's Fair 2011
Another great year for Steampunk World's Fair, the annual convention in New Jersey. The highlight for me was getting to try Bartitsu for the first time at Mark Donnelly's three workshops - I will save those photos for subsequent post. Only as we were leaving the hotel did I realize I forgot to ask anyone to take photos of me! There's only one shot of me in front of the hotel. But I took a whole bunch of the other attendees - greatest people-watching in the world was in the lobby of the Crowne Royal during the SPWF weekend.

Marvelously dressed steampunks were everyone one looked.

I thought he must be "Spring-Heeled Jack" but he's just
a steampunk who happens to be on spring heels!

A Professor Snape lookalike. This guy doesn't even have
to try. He just looks like a young Alan Rickman.

My Cold Warrioress ensemble. At SPWF I was addressed as "President
of the NYC Steampunk Club" which is very flattering. Of course there is
no such club, but if there was, I like to think I'd be the Social Secretary.

Psyche Corporation and her admirers. Of all the steampunk performers she's the one who seems most otherworldly to me.

I don't know what this is. There was no card or artist cited. I tried pulling some levers and pressing
buttons, but nothing happened - not that I know of. Perhaps a butterfly flapped its wings in China.

More category winners at the Beard and Mustache Contest. Not surprisingly, Bluebeard was among them.

Even more winners of the Beard and Mustache Contest. What can I tell you, I was really into clapping for chaps with 'staches.

Further winners of the B & MC. The ginger fellow in the center was one of many random bearded
and mustachioed fellows haplessly strolling by who were pulled into the contest by the MC.

I love that first outfit, you! Especially the - chaps? leggings?

Over the weekend, I took my monocle frame to be fitted with a lens by our lovely friend the optician. I'm really going to do a steampunk outfit this July at Otakon! So far, I've got skirt, boots, vest and shirt but I haven't tried them all together. I think I need a hat of some kind and more accessories. My idea is Steampunk Bluestocking.

Oh, if you mean the Cold Warrioress, thank you! You will get a kick out of this: those gaiters are made from an old tee-shirt. In fact they are a no-sew project. I really need to do a tutorial, it's so ridiculously easy. You just cut off the sleeve and part of the underarm of a tee shirt so it looks like an L. The short end of the L is the sleeve, and that drapes over the front of your foot and ankle. The long part goes up your calf. Fiddle around until it's the right width for your calf, then you just poke holes up the long slit with an awl and lace it up with anything you like - I used a long thin piece of the same tee shirt.

Sounds like you have a great start on your steampunk costume... maybe you should wear blue stockings! Taking it a bit literally! You can make a hat more 19th century by stripping off the modern trims and adding plumage, I mod hats all the time. You can also cut the brim off altogether and make it into a little cap for a military look.

I might be at a Baltimore convention called Darkovercon in November - I'd really like to go but they have it oddly scheduled for the day after Thanksgiving, not the ideal day for me but if possible, I'd like to check it out.

Ah, yes - that reminds me of a Link (of Zelda and the Ocarina fame) outfit I made for Tristan once; I found a huge forest green sweatshirt and cut off the band at the bottom to make it a ragged tunic, then the sleeves, one of which served very handily to make a pointy hat.

I did something similar for my Robin Hood jersey made from an oversized green tee. It's amazing what you can create from an old tee or sweatshirt.

UGH! I didn't see you! So sad I missed a chance to say hi!

Rickman's doppleganger is V. Nigel Taylor, Platform One's singer. He also has a SWEET set of Snape's robes, aside from being very dorky and sweet himself.

Thanks, I've been informed from various circles that the Snape lookalike is Mr. Taylor.
